Second Coming Checklist

The chart below contains nearly every prophetic passage in the New Testament, plus a few others that some might think are prophetic simply because a Greek word is used that sounds prophetic [such words as apocalypse, epiphany, etc.].

I’d like to know if any of these texts cannot have already been fulfilled. That is, I’d like to know if there is a prophetic verse in the New Testament which explicitly says by its own terms and on its face that it can only be fulfilled in the distant future (distant for the New Testament writer or his readers, but not necessarily for today’s readers).

In the chart below check the box in the right-hand column that best applies:

I contend that every text below, on its face, suggests a fulfillment at or before AD70. I find no text that demands by its very terms that it cannot possibly have been fulfilled by AD70. If you find such a text that can only be fulfilled in the future, please check the box on the far right. If there is even one verse that cannot have been fulfilled by AD70, then Preterism has been refuted.

If you find any other verses that are prophetic in nature, and particularly any you feel cannot have been fulfilled by AD70, please bring those verses to my attention.

(Revelation 6:14-17)  And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. {15} And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; {16} And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: {17} For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

(1 Corinthians 1:7)  So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the apocalypse of our Lord Jesus Christ:

(1 Corinthians 2:10)  But God hath apocalypsized them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

(1 Corinthians 3:13)  Every man’s work shall be made phaneros: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be apocalypsized by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

(1 Corinthians. 7:31) The form of this world is passing away.

(1 Corinthians 10:11) Now these things were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

(1 Corinthians 12:7)  But the phanerosis of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

(1 Corinthians 14:6)  Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by apocalypse, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

(1 Corinthians 14:26)  How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath an apocalypse, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

(1 Corinthians 14:30)  If any thing be apocalypsized to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

(1 Corinthians 15:23)  But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his parousia.

(1 Corinthians 15:51-52) We shall not all fall sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

(2 Corinthians 3:3)  Forasmuch as ye are phaneroowed to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

(2 Corinthians 4:2)  But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by phanerosis of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

(2 Corinthians 4:10-11)  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be phaneroowed in our body. {11} For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be phaneroowed in our mortal flesh.

(2 Corinthians 5:10-11)  For we must all phaneroowe before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. {11} Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are phaneroowed unto God; and I trust also are phaneroowed in your consciences.

(2 Corinthians 7:6-7)  Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the parousia of Titus; {7} And not by his parousia only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

(2 Corinthians 7:12)  Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might phaneroow unto you.

(2 Corinthians 10:10)  For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily parousia is weak, and his speech contemptible.

(2 Corinthians 11:6)  But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been thoroughly phaneroowed among you in all things.

(2 Corinthians 12:1)  It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and apocalypses of the Lord.

(2 Corinthians 12:7)  And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the apocalypses, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

(Galatians 1:12)  For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the apocalypse of Jesus Christ.

(Galatians 1:16)  To apocalypsize his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

(Galatians 2:2)  And I went up by apocalypse, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

(Galatians 3:23)  But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which was about to [mello] be apocalypsized.

(Ephesians 1:17)  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and apocalypse in the knowledge of him:

(Ephesians 1:21)  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is about to come: [mello]

(Ephesians 3:3)  How that by apocalypse he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

(Ephesians 3:5)  Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now apocalypsized unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

(Ephesians 5:13)  But all things that are reproved are phaneroowed by the light: for whatsoever doth phaneroow is light.

(Philippians 1:26)  That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my parousia to you again.

(Philippians 2:12)  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my parousia only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

(Philippians 3:15)  Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall apocalypsize even this unto you.

(Philippians. 4:5) The Lord is near.

(Colossians 1:23) The gospel was proclaimed in all creation under heaven.(Compare Matt. 24:14; Rom. 10:18; 16:26; Col. 1:5-6; 2 Tim. 4:17; Rev. 14:6-7; cf. 1 Clement 5,7)

(Colossians 1:26)  Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is phaneroowed to his saints:

(Colossians 2:17)  Which are a shadow of things about to come [mello]; but the body is of Christ.

(Colossians 3:1-6)  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. {2} Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. {3} For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. {4} When Christ, who is our life, shall phaneroow, then shall ye also phaneroow with him in glory. {5} Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). {6} On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.

(Colossians 4:3-4)  Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: {4} That I may phaneroow it, as I ought to speak.

(1 Thessalonians 2:19)  For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his parousia?

(1 Thessalonians 3:4)  For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we were about to [mello] suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

(1 Thessalonians 3:13)  To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)  But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. {14} For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. {15} For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the parousia of the Lord shall not precede them which are asleep. {16} For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: {17} Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. {18} Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

 (1 Thessalonians 5:4)  But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

(1 Thessalonians 5:23)  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(2 Thessalonians 1:6-8)  For it is indeed just of God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, {7} and to give relief to the afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus shall be apocalypsized from heaven with his mighty angels, {8} In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:. {9} These will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, {10} when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed. {11} To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith,

(2 Thessalonians 2:1)  Now we beseech you, brethren, by the parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

(2 Thessalonians 2:3)  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be apocalypsized, the son of perdition;

(2 Thessalonians 2:6)  And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be apocalypsized in his time.

(2 Thessalonians 2:8-9)  And then shall that Wicked be apocalypsized, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the epiphany of his parousia: {9} Even him, whose parousia is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

(1 Timothy 1:16)  Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which were about to believe on him to life everlasting.

(1 Timothy 3:16)  And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was phaneroowed in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

(1 Timothy 4:8)  For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is about to come. [mello]

(1 Timothy 6:14)  I charge you that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach, until the epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ:

(1 Timothy 6:19)  storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for that which is about to come [mello], so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed..

(2 Timothy 1:10)  But is now phaneroowed by the epiphany of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

(2 Timothy. 3:1-2,5-6,8-9)  In the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self. Avoid these men. For of these are those who enter into households and captivate weak women These also oppose the truth. But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all.

(2 Timothy 4:1)  I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is about to judge the living and the dead at his epiphany and his kingdom;

(2 Timothy 4:8)  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his epiphany.

(Titus 1:3)  But hath in due times phaneroowed his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

(Titus 2:11-13)  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath epiphainied to all men, {12} Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present age; {13} Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious epiphany of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

(Titus 3:4)  But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man epiphainied,

(Hebrews 1:1-2) God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son.

(Hebrews 1:14) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who are about to inherit salvation

(Hebrews 2:5)  For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world about to come [mello], whereof we speak.

(Hebrews 6:5)  And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world about to come, [mello]

(Hebrews 6:7-8) For ground that drinks the rain which often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and nigh unto cursing, whose end is to be burned.

(Hebrews 8:13) When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

(Hebrews 9:8-10)  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet phaneroowed, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.” (Compare Gal. 4:19; Eph. 2:21-22; 3:17; 4:13)

(Hebrews 9:11)  But Christ being come an high priest of good things about to come [mello], by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

(Hebrews 9:26)  For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he phaneroowed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

(Hebrews 10:1) For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things about to come

(Hebrews 10:25) as you see the Day drawing near.

(Hebrews 10:27) the fury of a fire which is about to consume the adversaries.

(Hebrews 13:14)  For here have we no continuing city, but we seek the one about to come. [mello]

(Hebrews 13:19)  But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be apokathistemized to you the sooner.

(James. 2:12) Speak and so act, as those who are about to be judged by the law of liberty.

(James. 5:1,3) Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!

(James 5:7-8)  Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the parousia of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. {8} Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the parousia of the Lord draweth nigh.

(1 Peter 1:5-7)  Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be apocalypsized in the last time. {6} Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: {7} That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the apocalypse of Jesus Christ:

(1 Peter 1:12-13)  Unto whom it was apocalypsized, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. {13} Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the apocalypse of Jesus Christ;

(1 Peter 1:20)  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was phaneroowed in these last times for you,

(1 Peter 4:5,7) They shall give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.”  {7}The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

(1 Peter 4:13)  But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be apocalypsized, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

(1 Peter 4:17) For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God.

(1 Peter 5:1)  The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that is about to be apocalypsized:

(1 Peter 5:4)  And when the chief Shepherd shall phaneroow, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

(2 Peter 1:16)  For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

(2 Peter 1:19) We have the prophetic word which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the Day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

(2 Peter 2:3) Their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

(2 Peter 3:1-13)  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: {2} That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: {3} Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, {4} And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. {5} For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: {6} Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: {7} But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. {8} But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. {9} The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. {10} But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. {11} Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, {12} Looking for and hasting the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? {13} Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

(1 John 1:2)  (For the life was phaneroowed, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

(1 John 2:17) The world is passing away, and its desires.

(1 John 2:18) It is the last hour. Even now many antichrists have arisen; from this we know that it is the last hour.” (Compare Matt. 24:23-34)

(1 John 4:9)  In this was phaneroowed the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

(Jude 1:4,14-15) For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation. About these also Enoch prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly”

(Jude 1:17-19) But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they were saying to you, “n the last time there shall be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.”These are the ones who cause divisions
