A justification of a king or queen's right to rule by the claim that he or she was given the right to rule by God. Contrary to popular belief, the notion of divine right of kings began only in the late medieval period, and was primarily an ideological justification for the increasing power of kings within centralized monarchies with respect to nobles within the kingdom.
