How Does the U.S. Government Benefit from Terrorism?

Thesis:
Government expands its power by creating "terrorist threats" against which it must "protect" us or itself.
When these "threats" become too real or too successful, Government denies their existence to protect its sterling track record of protection against terrorists.
U.S. Government also funds terrorists which are "pro-American" or "pro-western," or help destabilize "undemocratic" regimes.

Update!

This page was compiled long before the events of 9-11. Time does not permit updating this page with the thousands of links that would be necessary to prove our thesis through the events of 9-11. Here is a good place to start getting to the truth behind the destruction of the World Trade Center:

When a shoddy hideout becomes a "field headquarters," end fleeing the police is going into the "underground," the ordeal of being a wanted criminal becomes an ego trip. The first need in reforming TV news coverage of terrorism is what network executives might describe as truth-in-packaging.

NEW JBS Reaction to FBI's Megiddo Report

No Place to Hide: The Strategy and Tactics of Terrorism - Transcript
The John Birch Society has been a leader in distributing this network-quality program detailing the existence and operation of the international terrorist network. It shows how seemingly irrational and counterproductive acts are part of a larger plan to weaken and destroy non-communist governments. It also gives an understanding of how dictatorial laws for controlling terrorism are really nothing more than a move towards the new world order.

Domestic Terrorism

FALN Terrorists Set Free - December 20, 1999
Attacks on police are not limited to assaults, exaggerated claims of brutality or weak sentencing by liberal judges. President Clinton recently showed contempt for the men and women in blue by pardoning convicted terrorists guilty of committing violence against police.

Pipe-bomb Provocateurs - June 24, 1996
Federal agents provocateur created "terrorist" activity to justify the arrests of two Georgia militia members

International Terrorism

American-Made Terrorists - October 12, 1998
The President’s ill-advised missile strikes on supposed terrorist bases have inspired radical Islamic factions to a renewed and intense hatred of the United States

Sidebar: Islamic Extremists: U.S.-Financed, Enflamed, Seeking Revenge

Arafat and the ATF - September 15, 1997
The Clinton Administration’s campaign against terrorism has led the U.S. to provide crucial support to such characters as Yasser Arafat

Enemies and "Assets" - March 3, 1997
Middle East terrorists responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing had direct links to CIA and FBI agents and resources

Sidebar: U.S. Grocery Coupon Fraud Funds Middle Eastern Terrorism

The Clinton Administration's Terrorism Connections - November 25, 1996
CFR policy elites in government, academe, industry, and the media warn darkly of an impending terrorist threat they helped nurture and sustain

Cult of Terror - November 11, 1996
Japan's bizarre Aum cult, with its leader's vision of terror and control, provided the KGB with a prime deniable asset

Government Reaction to Terrorism

FBI's "Project Megiddo" - December 6, 1999
The FBI has joined in the attack on conservatives by issuing its "Project Megiddo" report to police agencies across the country. The report warns against millennial terrorism, paints constitutionalists, devout Christians, hate groups, and militias with the same broad strokes.

The FBI's "Project Megiddo" report
The report is available online from the FBI in a "PDF" format. To read the report from the FBI site please click here.

JBS Reaction to Megiddo Report
Contains the text of the letters sent from JBS President John F. McManus to President Clinton, Attorney General Reno, and FBI Director Freeh.

Criminalizing Dissent - November 8, 1999
Equally alarming is a recent increase in Leftist "watchdogs" advising police agencies in "preemptive" law enforcement. The resulting dragnet will increasingly target law-abiding gun owners, pro-lifers, homeschoolers, and other foes of the total state.

Historical Government Documents

Revolutionary Target: The American Penal System
Contains scans of the pages from a December 1973 report by the Committee on Internal Security of the House of Representatives. The report examined Marxist groups which were targeting inmates by exploiting the issue of prison reform. Various testimony from correctional officials demonstrated the leftist agitation had an impact on prison unrest and rioting. "

The Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization
Contains complete scans of the pages from a March 1976 staff study prepared by the U.S. Senate's Committee on the Judiciary. The study examined the increase in terrorist acts designed to gain attention and support for the Puerto Rican independence movement. As the foreword states, the study "gives insight into one method, used by Communists, to infiltrate and subvert an organization."

Ivory Tower Terror by Jeff A. Taylor
http://www.reason.com/0011/ci.jt.ivory.html
The panel, made up of private security experts and former government officials, also wants the Pentagon, as opposed to civilian agencies, to take the lead in responding to major terrorist attacks on American soil. Implicit in that change would be a move away from the law-and-order model the U.S. has applied to terrorists for decades, which holds that terrorists are not warriors but simple criminals. Either that, or the commission wants Congress to revisit the Posse Comitatus Act and allow the military to enforce domestic law.

Safety That Kills By Jacob Sullum November 19, 1997
The government denies that Flight 800 was downed by a terrorist missile. But everyone knows that the contrary is true. Which is why Congress was able to pass intrusive and costly airline regulations. Will these anti-terrorist regulations protect us against "malfunctions" like that aboard Flight 800?
