Law, Emotion,
Mind, Heart

Obedience to God's Law is one of the major themes of Vine & Fig Tree's web pages. We have been criticized for downplaying emotions and emphasizing the will, or emphasizing the mind at the expense of the heart. We certainly don't want to do this, for if God commands us to emphasize the heart, then we would be disobeying God's Law to overemphasize the mind.

We have already explored the relationship between law and love:

This page consists of a number of verses which explore the relationship between law and heart, and between mind and emotion. Our modern age breaks mind and heart (and law and emotion) into hermetically sealed compartments. The Bible does not. The Bible considers the mind and heart to be one. The Bible views emotionless obedience to law as disobedience. Those who stress the heart should consider that in the Bible the heart is the locus of thoughts and obedience, while the mind is the seat of emotions. Emotion is not a spontaneous and uncontrollable effect of some unknown cause, but is commanded by God's Law. We must set our mind on being properly emotional, and become properly emotional as an act of our will.
